The goal of the Performing Arts department is to provide each student a learning and aesthetic experience in drama. The curriculum emphasizes fundamental concepts of music and drama performance in the Lower and Middle School grades, that are then enhanced in the Upper School.

In the Lower School and Middle School, performance is incorporated into the standard curriculum through mini-productions involving movement, costumes, memorized lines and music.

In the Upper School, the theater program stages two major productions a year.

Recent productions include:

There are many opportunities for the vocal or instrumental musician at SRDS. Musical instruction begins in Pre-K & Kindergarten with general music classes offered twice a week in each grade level. Lower School students perform two concerts a year (Winter and Spring), including a mini-musical for all grades.

Vocal and choral instruction continues through the Middle and Upper School with a variety of opportunities, including Concert Choir, Women’s and Men's Chorus, the RebelTones Show Choir and small group ensembles. Performance groups often travel off campus to perform at various local community venues and/or functions. Private vocal lessons are offered at all levels.

Private and/or classroom instruction on musical instruments begins in grade 3 and continues through grade 12. Students in grades 4 and 5 are introduced to a wide variety of styles and musical periods through the “Upstart Orchestra”. This group performs numerous short selections at both the Winter and Spring concerts.

Instrumental instruction continues in the Middle School, grades 5-8, with the Middle School Orchestra. Standard repertoire includes compositions from a range of musical periods such as standard Classical pieces through modern Broadway show tunes. There is also a Middle School Jazz Ensemble designed to introduce students to classic jazz tunes and the art of improvisation. These groups perform two concerts a year (Winter and Spring) Private instrumental and piano lessons are offered by veteran professional instructors.

Further instrumental instruction is offered in the Upper School for students in grades 9-12. Concert Orchestra meets two times a week for students that have had at least one full year of instrumental experience. Other offerings include the Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble.
