TEDxMidAtlantic Conference Inspires Upper School Students
Students from SRDS had the opportunity to attend and assist at this year's TEDxMidAtlantic conference in Washington, D.C.
For the third year in a row, students from Saddle River Day were invited to attend the TEDxMidAtlantic conference as the onlyhigh school assistants at the conference. Students were involved in every facet from manning booths to assisting in speaker prep.
From the TEDxMidAtlantic website: The world is changing fast. Often so fast that we don’t take the time to think about what kind of society and future we actually want to build. Politics has become disconnected from fact. Innovation is pursued without consideration of ethics. Around the world, we need to help build bridges.
New Rules asks: • How can we be more empathetic when we design for the future? • How can we reconnect policy with facts, truth, and logic? • What ethics should we pursue as we shape our rapidly changing world?
The answers are elusive — but we become stronger when we ask these questions together. What are the New Rules that will help guide us for the next century?
In this time of accelerated history and unprecedented change, each of us possesses unique insights and talents – their true impact often not yet discovered. Whether through incredible leaps in science or in simple grace amid great trials, all of us together will overcome today’s challenges to forge a surprising future. Perhaps unfamiliar, it will still be recognizable: fair, kind, human… even super-human. Join us, as we discover SUPERPOWERS both known and waiting to be discovered, through stories of individual triumph and global interconnectedness; this future is one we will enthusiastically embrace.
TED conferences bring together the world’s leading thinkers and doers for a series of talks, presentations and performances. TED events have been called “The ultimate brain spa,” “Davos for optimists” and “A journey into the future, in the company of those creating it.”
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At such an event, TED Talks and live speakers combine to spark deep conversation. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where “x” notes that the event is independently organized. The main TED staff provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but these events are self-organized. (The preceding are excerpts from the TEDx website.)
Congrats to our students for representing SRDS at the conference alongside Laura Hollis, Director of Technology and campus TED coordinator extraordinaire who works hard all year and her staff @SRDS to present thought-provoking ideas through TED Talks in the spring. SRDS will host its third annual event in May, 2018.
