Students Participate in the Global Citizens Model United Nations Conference

SRDS students were tasked with representing the interests of Costa Rica and Kuwait.

The GCMUN conference took place over the course of 3 days and brought together over 1200 delegates from all over the world, including students from the countries of Egypt, Zimbabwe and Italy to name a few. Students worked in 6 separate committees to debate and draft resolutions pertaining to issues ranging from the weaponization of space to the copyright protections of digital content and their implications on education in developing countries. The event culminated in a session held in the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters. Students passed several resolutions in the General Assembly and were then addressed by Swedish Ambassador, Olof Skoog and Italian Ambassador, Stefano Stefanile.

Our delegation performed admirably! Three students were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the conference. Freshmen Eli Weinger was awarded an honorable mention for Best Position Paper and for Best Delegate of the SPECPOL committee. Junior Sam Pitchkhadze was awarded honorable mention for best delegate in the DISEC committee, and Senior Gokhan Cengel was awarded honorable mention for best delegate of the SOCHUM committee.

For a few of our students, this was their first major public speaking experience.  With the success of this past event, the Model UN team is looking to expand to other competitions including ones at Stuyvesant High School and Columbia University.
