Amrita Singh '22 Travels to the Dominican Republic to Help Deliver Humanitarian Medical Relief
Gretchen Lee

Ami, Class of 2022, traveled with her mother, Dr. Saraswati Dayal, to engage in volunteer medical service.

In Ami's own words:
"From the power going out in the operating room to brushing my teeth with bottled water, the LIG Global Foundation has given me an amazing experience that I will carry close to my heart for the rest of my life. I engaged in a service trip for one week to benefit and support others’ lives. This medical mission was held in Dajabon, Dominican Republic right on the border with Ouanaminthe, Haiti. The LIG volunteers and I helped out with a special needs school, Centro Educativo Especiales, and a hospital, Hospital Ramon Matias Mella.

My favorite part about the school was communicating with the students. Because I have been learning Spanish since 4th grade, I was able to speak and understand the kids very clearly, which then led me to be a part-time translator for some of the LIG volunteers. The hospital was also an unforgettable experience. In Dajabon I got the chance to actually scrub in and assist in surgeries, an opportunity you do not have in the United States as a high school volunteer. This gave me a whole new perspective of the medical field.

I am glad I got this opportunity to help others and deliver humanitarian relief and happiness to people who really need it. Seeing the light in the students’ and patients’ eyes really had an impact on me. This experience was one I will never forget."

The LIG Global Foundation’s vision is that of a global community in which all persons have access to excellent health-care, where no one is forgotten, and where human dignity is cherished. For more information about the LIG Foundation, visit their website: http://ligglobal.org/beta/about-us/
