We believe that the college counseling process involves a partnership of close communication and cooperation between the student, the parents, and the counselor. These partners work together to find the best college to fit the abilities, strengths and needs of each student. Over the years, our students have attended the most highly selective and competitive colleges and universities in the country and abroad.

With dramatic changes in the college admissions process over the past 10 years, colleges have become increasingly more selective, and have doubled, and sometimes tripled, the number of applications they have to consider.  Many colleges which were once considered a “likely” or a “safety” have enjoyed a rise in selectivity, a fact that has caused undue stress and confusion for many families.  The College Counseling Office at Saddle River Day School approaches the college process as a personal journey for each student, where the selection of colleges and test schedule are individualized.

Formally beginning in the junior year, students and parents are offered a number of focused college evenings and assembly periods that familiarize them with the details of the college process.  Families are required to have at least one individual meeting with the college office in the winter of junior year.  In the spring of junior year and the fall of senior year students are enrolled in College Counseling Workshop, which meets weekly with Ms. Ferretti.  Other events such as Get Your Application Done Days, mock admissions interviews, and essay writing session are also available at different points throughout the year.  By personalizing the college admissions process, we have been very successful in helping students make informed decisions about their future plans for college as well as beyond their college years.
