Upper School Overview - Grades 9-12

Upper School students, grades 9-12, follow a rigorous college preparatory curriculum in the five major subject areas with opportunities for honors-level and/or advanced placement courses in English, US and European history, Calculus AB and BC, biology, chemistry, physics, Latin, Spanish, and French. Upper School students are required to complete four years of English, three years of mathematics, three years of laboratory science, three years of History, level three proficiency of a foreign language, and six credits in the arts in order to graduate.

Upper School students are guided and counseled closely by the Dean of the Upper School, the Director of College Placement, Heads of Departments and individual faculty advisors. Honors sections in all subjects are offered all four years. A number of electives including world literature, studio art, choral and instrumental music, psychology, government, economics, American Society, Academic Decathlon and science disciplines are also offered.

SRDS is a classic college preparatory school in which 100% of its senior class matriculates at college. Alumni tracking indicates that once in college, SRDS graduates feel very well-prepared. They have already learned good study habits, advanced writing and laboratory skills and how to do library research and computer presentations. They have been well-counseled about the college placement process by a veteran counselor who personally works with each student and parent over a three-year period fitting the college to the student. Sixty or more college representatives visit the campus every year. A partial list of college acceptances includes: Amherst, Boston College, Brandeis, Brown, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Franklin & Marshall, Haverford, Harvard, Lafayette, Lehigh, NYU, Penn State, RISD, Syracuse, Tufts, Union, Yale and Williams. With strong programs in student government, community service, yearbook, newspaper and literary magazine, peer leadership, concert choir and orchestra, major theater productions, and junior varsity and varsity athletic programs, Upper School students have many opportunities to be energetically engaged in the life of the school.
