Instruction at all levels in the Lower School is self-contained, with occasional team teaching for special themes/ projects in grades four and five. The classroom teacher provides the academic instruction for reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and computers. Specialists teach science, world languages (French and Spanish), art, library skills, music, both vocal and instrumental, and physical education. Our small class sizes (no more than 16) allow us to differentiate instruction, balancing academics with the development of confidence and responsibility. The Philosophy of the Lower School
We believe that our students come to us eager to learn and curious about the world around them, making it our challenge to help each of them use these attributes to reach his/her potential.
We believe an important element in that process is to provide a firm grounding in the traditional skills of reading/language arts and mathematics.
We believe that the natural curiosity of students at this age lends itself ideally to early formation of concepts of science and social studies.
We believe that learning "how to learn" is a vital goal, taking on increasing importance through the grades. Skills in this area should be developed not only in the basic programs, but also through extended library/research skills and the use of computers/technology situations in a holistic work habits/study skills program.
We acknowledge the importance of providing well-rounded experiences that extend beyond the typical classroom situation. Woven into the Lower School day are opportunities for directed instruction in art, vocal and instrumental music, world languages and physical education.
We believe that reading is one of the core elements of the communication arts, hence, is of prime importance in a K-5 school.
We believe we can make a significant difference in the critical affective domain development of our students. We acknowledge that a student with self-confidence and positive self-esteem is more likely to experience success, and we strive to promote that. |
